Burning Yard Debris

Eastern Wake Fire Department

Yard Debris Burning Recommendations

No open burning is allowed on days having Air Quality levels of RED, ORANGE, or PURPLE

Read more on the North Carolina Statue regarding Open Burning

Materials burned must originate from the property, such as leaves, tree branches, yard trimmings, etc.
Non-vegetative materials, such as household garbage or other man-made materials, may not be burned.

Burning shall not be started earlier than 8:00 AM. No additional combustible material may be added to the fire between 6:00 PM on one day and 8:00 AM the next.

WATCH YOUR FIRE UNTIL IT IS COMPLETELY EXTINGUISHED.

A charged water hose and rake must be available at the fire in case the fire burns too quickly.

Clear an area around the debris pile to be burned down to the topsoil. Remember, the larger the pile, the wider the cleared area should be.

The debris pile to be burned shall be at least 100 feet from any structures.

Do not burn near the woods. Most forest fires in North Carolina are started by careless debris burning.

You should notify Eastern Wake Fire Department at 217-0054 and your neighbors of your intent to burn yard debris. Burning yard debris should not cause a nuisance to your neighbors.

Yard debris is not to be burned when the Division of Forest Resources has banned burning for this area.
Do not burn on windy days.

Do not start your fire with gasoline, kerosene, or other flammable liquids.

IF YOUR FIRE ESCAPES, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!
